What makes crescent ice different?

Most cube machines freeze water in a grid and release a sheet of cubes. Hoshizaki's KM machines form each crescent individually on a stainless steel evaporator. The result is a hard, clear cube with a distinctive half-moon shape:

  • Displacement and cooling: the curved shape packs well in a glass and gives broad contact with the drink.
  • Dispensing: the cubes slide easily, which is why crescent ice is popular on beverage dispensers and soda fountains.
  • Presentation: it is clean and recognizable in soft drinks, water and mixed drinks.

Crescent cube is Hoshizaki's signature ice shape, so every model on this page is a Hoshizaki. Compare it with full cube and half cube ice from other brands.

Dispenser-ready crescent heads (KMD)

The KMD-355MAJ (395 lb/day) and KMD-505MAJ (500 lb/day) are 30-inch heads designed to sit on a compatible ice dispenser or bin. They suit quick-service fountain stations, hotel floors and self-serve beverage counters. Check the required top kit for your dispenser.

Who chooses crescent ice?

Quick-service and fast-casual restaurants on soda fountains, hotels, sports bars and healthcare cafeterias that want a clean-looking cube that dispenses reliably. For bars and cocktails, many operators run crescent cube in the well and a large cube or sphere maker for spirits.

Protect the evaporator

Filtered water reduces scale on the evaporator and keeps cubes clear. Hoshizaki's own filter systems include the H9320-51 single, H9320-52 twin and H9320-53 triple filters. Match the filter to your machine's production. Browse all Hoshizaki ice machines.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is crescent ice?

Crescent ice is a half-moon shaped ice cube, about 1-1/2 x 1-1/8 x 1/2 inch, with a flat back and a curved front. It is made by Hoshizaki ice machines, which form each cube individually on a stainless steel evaporator. It is hard, clear and dispenses smoothly.

Who makes crescent cube ice machines?

Crescent cube ice is Hoshizaki's signature ice shape. Hoshizaki makes it in undercounter KM machines with built-in bins, modular KM heads from 22 to 48 inches wide, and dispenser-ready KMD heads.

Crescent ice vs full cube ice: what's the difference?

Full cube ice is a square dice, about 7/8 inch on each side, made by most brands. Crescent ice is Hoshizaki's half-moon cube with a flat back and curved front. Both melt slowly. Crescent dispenses especially smoothly and lets beverages flow around the ice.

Is crescent ice good for bars and restaurants?

Yes. Crescent ice works well in soft drinks, water, iced tea and mixed drinks, and it is common on soda fountains and beverage dispensers. Cocktail bars often pair it with a specialty large cube or sphere machine for spirits.

Can a crescent cube machine sit on a dispenser?

Yes, if you choose a dispenser-ready head. Hoshizaki's KMD-355MAJ and KMD-505MAJ are 30-inch crescent heads designed to sit on a compatible ice dispenser or bin. Check the required top kit or adapter on the product page.
