Who needs a 500 lb ice machine?
500 lb/day is the most common size for full-service restaurants, busy bars and mid-size hotels. Using Manitowoc's rules of thumb (1.5 lb per restaurant seat, 3 lb per bar seat), it typically covers:
- A restaurant with about 200-300 seats, or fewer seats with a busy bar
- A bar or nightclub with 120-150 seats
- Hotel guest ice for about 80-100 rooms (at 5 lb per room)
If your estimate is close to 500 lb, size for the warm-day output below, or go up to the next size.
"500 lb" doesn't always mean 500 lb
Titles list output at 70°F air and 50°F water. The AHRI rating at 90°F air and 70°F water is lower. Two examples from our own production ratings guide:

22 or 30 inches? A 22-inch head saves counter or wall space and fits 22-inch bins. A 30-inch head fits the most common bin width and gives more bin choices. Half cube and half dice versions of most models are also in the grid above.
Pair the head with the right bin
A 500 lb head usually sits on a bin that holds about 300-550 lb, matched to the head's width:

500 lb ice and water dispensers
For self-service, the Scotsman Meridian HID525AX-1 and HID540AX-1 make 500 lb/day of nugget ice and dispense it hands-free, with 25 or 40 lb of storage. See hotel ice machines for more dispenser options.
Power and cooling
Many 500 lb heads run on 115V (the ICETRO IM-0550 series, for example), while others need 208-230V. Check before you order. Air-cooled is standard. Pick water-cooled only for hot, poorly ventilated rooms where codes allow, or a remote condenser model to move heat out of the kitchen. Brand-specific options: Manitowoc 500 lb and Hoshizaki 500 lb. One size down: 400 lb. One size up: 600 lb.
