What is Indigo NXT?
Manitowoc introduced Indigo NXT in 2018 as the next generation of its modular cubers. It is the line most restaurants, bars and hotels mean when they talk about a Manitowoc ice machine on a bin. The platform is built around three ideas:
- Easier operation: a 2.8-inch icon-based easyTouch display with full-color status indicators, a start-up wizard, and one-touch access to asset information, the service menu, reminders and alerts.
- Easier cleaning: a hinged front door that opens without removal, a front-facing evaporator, smooth rounded interior corners, and sanitizing parts that come out without tools.
- Smarter control: peak-rate scheduling to switch the machine off during peak electricity pricing, auto-detection of key accessories, water-use settings, and a display lock against tampering. Manitowoc's acoustical ice-sensing probe works with Active Sense software to manage harvest cycles as conditions change.
The optional LuminIce II sanitation device helps keep the food zone cleaner between scheduled cleanings. The DuraTech exterior has a clear-coat finish that resists fingerprints and dirt. Manitowoc reports more than 500,000 hours of testing on the platform, and all models are AHRI certified.
IDP vs IDT: current and legacy models
This is the single most important thing to understand before buying an Indigo NXT head, and few retailers explain it.
| IDP / IRP models | IDT models | |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerant | R290 (natural hydrocarbon) | R410A |
| Status on our product pages | Current production | Several listed as legacy, each with an IDP replacement |
| Examples | IDP0500A, IDP0600AP, IDP1000AP, IRP0500A | IDT0300A, IDT0450A, IDT0620A, IDT0900A, IDT1200A |
Legacy IDT units still make good ice and can be good value, especially when you are replacing a like-for-like head on an existing bin. For a new installation, the current IDP version is usually the better long-term choice for parts availability and refrigerant. Check warranty and replacement-model compatibility on the product page before you commit to a legacy unit.

Specifications from each product page. "See spec" means the warm-day figure on that listing needs confirming with the spec sheet.
What the table tells you
- The IDP0600AP is the most ice you can get from a 115V Indigo NXT head: 514 lb/day even at 90/70.
- 22-inch heads (IDT0420A, IDT0620A) fit tight spaces and 22-inch bins, and still make 375-450 lb/day at 90/70.
- Full dice vs regular cube: the IRP0500A makes regular cube, Manitowoc's larger cube, for drinks that sit longer and for slower melting in bins. Full dice (about 7/8 inch) is the all-purpose cube.
- Warm-day loss is about 18-25% across the range. The IDP0500A drops from 515 to 421 lb/day.
Choosing a size
Rules of thumb: 1.5 lb of ice per restaurant seat, 3 lb per bar seat, 5 lb per hotel room per day. Size to the 90/70 output and add 10-20% for peaks.
| Operation | Peak-day ice | Indigo NXT pick |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurant with 120 seats | about 180-200 lb | IDT0300A (230 lb at 90/70) or step up for headroom |
| Bar with 100-120 seats | about 300-360 lb | IDT0420A (22 in.) or IDP0500A (30 in.) |
| Restaurant with 250 seats and a bar | about 450 lb | IDP0600AP (514 lb) |
| 140-room hotel, guest ice | about 700 lb | IDP1000AP (790 lb) |
| Stadium, large hotel or hospital kitchen | 1,000+ lb | IDT1900A, or two heads for backup |
For capacity above 1,000 lb, see industrial ice machines. For the 500 lb class across brands, see 500 lb ice machines.
Pairing with a Manitowoc bin
An Indigo NXT head needs a bin (or dispenser) of matching width. Bin capacity should cover your busiest service period, not your daily total.
| Bin | Width | Capacity | Typical heads |
|---|---|---|---|
| D320 | 22 in. | 264 lb | IDT0420A, IDT0620A |
| D400 | 30 in. | 365 lb | IDT0300A, IDP0500A |
| D570 | 30 in. | 532 lb | IDP0500A, IDP0600AP, IDP1000AP |
| D970 | 48 in. | 882 lb | Large heads or two heads side by side |
| F1300 | 48 in. upright | 1,194 lb | IDT1900A and high-volume systems |
| F1325 | 60 in. upright | 1,238 lb | High-volume systems |
Putting a head on a wider bin usually needs an adapter or top kit. Confirm compatibility on the product page. See our bin sizing guide and the full range of ice storage bins.
Power, water and placement
- Electrical: the 115V heads (up to the IDP0600AP) need a dedicated circuit. The IDP1000AP, IDT0900A and IDT1200A need 208-230V single-phase. The IDT1900A needs 208-230V three-phase.
- Water: potable water through a Manitowoc ArcticPure filter sized to the head. The AR-10000-P, AR-20000-P and AR-40000-P are rated for 15,000, 20,000 and 40,000 gallons. Add the AR-PRE-P pre-filter if your water carries sediment. See Manitowoc water filters.
- Drain: gravity drains for head and bin.
- Air: these are air-cooled heads. Give them the clearance in the installation manual and keep them away from fryers and ovens. For hot rooms or noise-sensitive spaces, consider a remote condenser model.
Read commercial ice machine electrical requirements and water pressure requirements before installing.
Running costs and efficiency
Manitowoc states that Indigo NXT exceeds U.S. DOE energy standards and that many models are ENERGY STAR qualified, which can make them eligible for utility rebates. The IDT0420A, for example, lists 5.6 kWh per 100 lb of ice. At an assumed $0.15 per kWh, making 400 lb a day costs about $3.40 in electricity. The peak-rate scheduling feature can cut that further where your utility charges more at peak times. See our operating cost guide.
Replacing an IDT head with a current IDP
If you are replacing a legacy IDT head, check these points before ordering the IDP replacement:
- Width and bin fit. Most 30-inch IDT heads have a 30-inch IDP replacement. Confirm that it fits your existing bin and adapter.
- Electrical. Compare the voltage and amperage on both spec sheets. The IDP0500A and IDP0600AP run on 115V; the IDP1000AP needs 208-230V.
- Output. Check the 90/70 figure, not just the model number. The IDP0600AP makes 514 lb/day at 90/70, more than the IDT0620A's 450.
- Refrigerant. IDP models use R290. Service technicians need to be qualified to work with hydrocarbon refrigerant, which most commercial refrigeration companies now are.
- Water filter. A new head is a good time to replace the filter cartridge and pre-filter.
LuminIce II: does it pay off?
LuminIce II is Manitowoc's optional built-in sanitation device for Indigo NXT. It is designed to slow the growth of microorganisms in the food zone between cleanings, with a status icon and service indicators on the display. Manitowoc positions it as a way to keep the food zone cleaner for longer and reduce cleaning frequency and cost.
It tends to pay off where cleaning is expensive or hard to schedule: hospitals, 24-hour operations, busy QSRs and sites where a technician does the cleaning. In a small restaurant with a regular six-month cleaning routine, it is a nice-to-have. Remember that a sanitation device does not replace scheduled cleaning and descaling.
Peak-rate scheduling in practice
Many commercial electricity tariffs charge more during peak hours, often in the afternoon and early evening. Indigo NXT's peak-rate scheduling lets you switch the head off during those hours and make ice before and after. A head with a large enough bin can build up ice overnight and in the morning, then coast through the expensive hours. For this to work, the bin has to hold your peak-period use, so it pairs well with a D570 or larger bin.
Warranty
Indigo NXT product pages list 3 years parts and labor on the ice machine. The IDT0420A and IDT1200A pages also list 5 years parts and labor on the evaporator. Confirm the current terms on each product page, especially for legacy models. Our warranty guide has more detail.
Cleaning and maintenance
The front-facing evaporator, hinged door and tool-free sanitizing parts make Indigo NXT one of the easier modular heads to clean. The easyTouch display shows cleaning reminders. Plan to clean and sanitize at least every six months and change the water filter on schedule. Follow our maintenance checklist.
Indigo NXT by venue
- Full-service restaurants: IDP0500A or IDP0600AP on a D400 or D570 bin covers most single sites on 115V.
- Bars: a 22-inch IDT0420A fits behind tight back bars on a D320 bin, making 375 lb/day at 90/70.
- Hotels: IDP1000AP for guest floors or banquet kitchens; pair two heads on a D970 for high-occupancy properties.
- Healthcare and institutions: consider LuminIce II and peak-rate scheduling, and size bins to cover meal-service peaks.
- Table water service: the IRP0500A's regular cube melts more slowly in water glasses.
Indigo NXT vs NEO vs other brands
- Indigo NXT vs NEO: Indigo NXT heads sit on a separate bin and make 305-1,900 lb/day. Manitowoc NEO machines are self-contained undercounter units with a built-in bin, making 52-330 lb/day. Choose NEO when you need under 300 lb/day in one cabinet.
- Indigo NXT vs Scotsman Prodigy ELITE: both are modular cube heads with digital diagnostics. Prodigy ELITE adds a Bluetooth app; Indigo NXT adds a touch display and peak-rate scheduling. See Scotsman Prodigy ice machines.
- Other brands: compare crescent cube ice machines from Hoshizaki, or browse all modular ice machines and the complete Manitowoc ice machine range.
