Prodigy ELITE vs Prodigy Plus
Scotsman uses the Prodigy name across several generations, which confuses many buyers. The two lines we carry do different jobs:
| Prodigy ELITE (MC...MAX / MA) | Prodigy Plus (NH... / NS...) | |
|---|---|---|
| Ice | Medium cube, about 7/8 x 7/8 x 7/8 in. | Nugget: H² Nugget (NH) or Original Chewable Nugget (NS) |
| Output range (70/50) | 362-1,909 lb/day | 375-1,314 lb/day |
| Widths | 22, 30 and 48 in. | 22 in. |
| Key features | ICELINQ app via Bluetooth for diagnostics, settings and guided cleaning; external AutoAlert status panel | Sealed, maintenance-free bearings; stainless steel evaporator and auger |
| Typical buyers | Restaurants, bars, hotels, stadiums | Healthcare, convenience stores, QSR fountain drinks, hotels |
Older Prodigy models (and the newer Prodigy Advance series) exist too. If you are replacing an older Prodigy head, match the width and bin. The current heads fit Scotsman's standard 22, 30 and 48 inch bins.
Prodigy ELITE medium cube heads
Scotsman's "medium cube" is a full-size cube, not a small one. It is the cube most bars and restaurants use for mixed drinks, water and soft drinks. Scotsman also makes small cube (half-size) versions of these heads. See small cube ice makers if that's what you need.
| Model | Rated lb/day (70/50) | At 90/70 | Width | Power | Energy (kWh/100 lb) | Water (gal/100 lb) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MC0322MAX-1 | 362 | 248 | 22 in. | 115V | 5.99 | 20.0 |
| MC0330MAX-1 | 365 | 283 | 30 in. | 115V | 5.64 | 19.0 |
| MC0530MAX-1 | 476 | 370 | 30 in. | 115V | 4.75 | 18.7 |
| MC0630MAX-1 | 582 | 479 | 30 in. | 115V | 5.18 | 17.6 |
| MC0830MAX-32 | 921 | 708 | 30 in. | 208-230V | 5.17 | 18.0 |
| MC1030MAX-32 | 1,041 | 782 | 30 in. | 208-230V | 4.99 | 18.9 |
| MC1448MA-32 | 1,553 | 1,188 | 48 in. | 208-230V | 4.74 | 18.0 |
| MC1848MA-32 | 1,909 | 1,426 | 48 in. | 208-230V | 4.48 | 18.0 |
What stands out
- 22 vs 30 inches at the same rating: the MC0322 and MC0330 are both rated about 365 lb/day, but at 90/70 the 30-inch MC0330 makes 283 lb against 248 lb for the 22-inch model. That is 14% more ice in warm conditions. Choose the 22-inch only when width is the constraint.
- The MC0630MAX-1 is the largest 115V head, at 479 lb/day even at 90/70. Above that, every ELITE head needs 208-230V.
- Bigger heads are more efficient. Energy falls from 5.99 kWh/100 lb on the MC0322 to 4.48 on the MC1848.
Prodigy Plus nugget heads
Scotsman makes two nugget textures, and the model prefix tells you which:
- H² Nugget Ice (NH models): about 3/4 x 5/16 x 3/8 inch. Scotsman rates it at about 87% hardness. It is still chewable but firmer and slower melting, which suits fountain drinks and high-volume dispensing.
- Original Chewable Nugget Ice (NS models): about 7/16 x 5/16 x 3/8 inch and about 74% hardness. This is the soft texture behind Scotsman's "The Original Chewable Ice" name, popular in healthcare and patient hydration.
| Model | Nugget type | Rated lb/day (70/50) | At 90/70 | Width | Power | Energy (kWh/100 lb) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| NH0422AX-1 | H² | 375 | 285 | 22 in. | 115V | 5.00 |
| NH0622AX-1 | H² | 644 | 466 | 22 in. | 115V | 4.10 |
| NH0922AX-1 | H² | 862 | 695 | 22 in. | 115V | 3.87 |
| NS1322AX-32 | Original Chewable | 1,314 | 1,001 | 22 in. | 208-230V | 3.78 |
All four use about 12 gallons of water per 100 lb of ice, roughly a third less than the ELITE cubers, because a nugget machine doesn't rinse an evaporator between harvests. The NH0922AX-1 is notable: 862 lb/day of nugget ice from a 22-inch head on a standard 115V circuit. Compare other brands on our nugget ice machine heads page.
Reading Scotsman model numbers
| Part | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Prefix | MC / NH / NS | MC = modular cuber (ELITE); NH = H² nugget; NS = Original Chewable nugget |
| First 2 digits | 0530 | Output class in hundreds of lb (05 = about 500 lb) |
| Last 2 digits | 0530 | Cabinet width in inches (22, 30 or 48) |
| Letters | M / A | M = medium cube, A = air-cooled (further letters identify the configuration) |
| Suffix | -1 / -32 | -1 = 115V; -32 = 208-230V single-phase |
So the MC0530MAX-1 is a medium cube, air-cooled, 30-inch head of about 500 lb/day on 115V.
ICELINQ and AutoAlert (Prodigy ELITE)
Two features make the ELITE easier to live with after installation:
- ICELINQ app: connects to the machine over Bluetooth for real-time diagnostics, settings, unit information and guided cleaning. A manager or technician can check the machine from a phone without removing panels.
- AutoAlert panel: an external panel that shows machine status and bin-full condition on an easy-to-read 16-segment display, so staff can see at a glance whether the machine needs attention, cleaning or descaling.
These matter more than they sound. Most ice machine service calls start with "it stopped making ice", and a visible status code tells you whether the cause is a full bin, a water problem or a fault.
Choosing the right bin
A Prodigy head makes ice; the bin stores it. Match the bin width to the head and its capacity to your busiest stretch of service.
| Head width | Scotsman bin options | Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| 22 in. | B322S | 370 lb |
| 30 in. | B330P, B530P | 344 lb, 536 lb |
| 42-48 in. | B842S, B948S, BL1048S | 778 lb, 893 lb, 1,000 lb |
| 48 in. (very high volume) | BL1660S (60 in.) | 1,660 lb |
Fitting a head to a wider bin usually needs an adapter or top kit. Confirm the exact pairing on the product page or ask us. See all ice storage bins and our bin sizing guide. Nugget heads can also sit on compatible dispensers for self-serve drinks.
Sizing a Prodigy head
- Estimate peak-day use. Rules of thumb: 1.5 lb per restaurant seat, 3 lb per bar seat, 5 lb per hotel room.
- Compare against the 90/70 column, not the headline rating.
- Add 10-20% headroom for growth and summer peaks.
| Operation | Peak-day ice | Prodigy pick |
|---|---|---|
| Bar with 80 seats | about 240 lb | MC0330MAX-1 (283 lb at 90/70) |
| Restaurant with 200 seats and a bar | about 400 lb | MC0630MAX-1 (479 lb) |
| 120-room hotel, guest ice | about 600 lb | MC0830MAX-32 (708 lb) |
| Hospital nutrition service, chewable ice | about 600 lb | NH0922AX-1 (695 lb) |
| Arena or stadium concourse | 1,000+ lb | MC1448MA-32 or MC1848MA-32 |
Replacing an older Scotsman head
Many Prodigy ELITE buyers are replacing an older Scotsman head. A few checks make it a straight swap:
- Width: match the existing head (22, 30 or 48 inches) so it sits on your current bin without a new adapter.
- Voltage: if your old head ran on 208-230V, a -32 model may be able to use the same circuit once an electrician confirms the amperage. Moving from 115V to a -32 head needs new wiring.
- Ice type: if staff are used to medium cube, stay with an MC model. Switching to nugget means a different bin or a dispenser.
- Bin condition: inspect and clean the bin before setting the new head. A new head on a dirty bin still makes dirty ice.
- Output: the warm-day ratings above are often better than older generations at the same size, so you may be able to buy one size smaller. Confirm against your peak use first.
Running cost: MC0530 vs MC0630
Both are 30-inch, 115V heads. Using the published figures for a site that needs 400 lb a day, at $0.15 per kWh:
| MC0530MAX-1 | MC0630MAX-1 | |
|---|---|---|
| Warm-day output | 370 lb/day | 479 lb/day |
| Energy per 100 lb | 4.75 kWh | 5.18 kWh |
| Electricity per year at 400 lb/day | about $1,040 | about $1,130 |
| Covers 400 lb on a hot day? | No | Yes |
The MC0630MAX-1 costs about $90 a year more to run but is the only one that covers the hot-day demand. Undersizing usually costs more in lost sales and emergency bagged ice than the energy saved.
Prodigy heads by industry
- Restaurants and bars: MC0330MAX-1 to MC0630MAX-1 on a 30-inch bin cover most single sites on 115V.
- Hotels: MC0830MAX-32 or MC1030MAX-32 for guest floors and banquet kitchens. See hotel ice machines.
- Healthcare: NH0622AX-1 or NH0922AX-1 for patient nugget ice; NS1322AX-32 for the softest Original Chewable texture at volume. See healthcare ice machines.
- Convenience stores and QSR: an NH head on a Scotsman dispenser for chewable fountain ice.
- Stadiums and arenas: MC1448MA-32 or MC1848MA-32 on large bins, often in pairs for backup.
Example: one QSR, two Prodigy heads
A busy drive-through restaurant uses about 500 lb of ice a day: fountain drinks at the front and cube ice for the kitchen and drive-through cups. A common setup:
- Front counter: an NH0622AX-1 (466 lb/day at 90/70) on a Scotsman nugget dispenser for self-serve chewable ice.
- Back of house: an MC0330MAX-1 (283 lb/day at 90/70) on a B330P bin for cups, shakers and kitchen use.
Two heads give the store both ice types and a backup if one machine needs service.
Installation requirements
- Electrical: -1 models run on 115V; -32 models need a dedicated 208-230V single-phase circuit. Check amperage on the spec sheet.
- Water: potable water within the pressure range on the spec sheet (the MC0322MAX-1 lists 20-80 PSIG). Add a Scotsman AquaPatrol filter sized for the head's output.
- Drain: separate gravity drains for the head and the bin, with an air gap.
- Air: these are air-cooled heads. Allow the clearance in the installation manual, and avoid putting the head next to fryers or ovens. For hot rooms, look at remote condenser or water-cooled options.
Warranty
The Prodigy ELITE product pages list 3 years parts and labor on all components, with 5 years on the evaporator. Prodigy Plus nugget heads list 3 years parts and labor on all components, with 5 years on the compressor. Confirm current terms on each product page. Our warranty guide explains the details.
Maintenance
- Clean and sanitize at least every six months; ICELINQ's guided cleaning walks staff through it on ELITE heads.
- Prodigy Plus nugget heads use sealed bearings that don't need greasing, but the auger and evaporator still need descaling. Treat the water.
- Clean the air filter monthly.
