Is a 100 lb ice machine enough?
A 100 lb/day machine usually covers:
- A restaurant or café with 40-60 seats (at about 1.5 lb per seat per day)
- A bar with 25-35 seats (at about 3 lb per seat per day)
- An office or clinic of 50-100 people drinking iced water and soft drinks
These per-seat figures are Manitowoc's published rules of thumb. If your estimate is above 100 lb, or your kitchen runs hot, step up to a 150 lb or 200 lb class model. A machine that's slightly too big costs less over its life than one that runs out at the dinner rush.
Real output in a warm room
The "100 lb" in the name is the 70°F air / 50°F water rating. At 90°F air and 70°F water, the AHRI test condition, output drops:
| Model | Rated (70/50) | At 90/70 | Drop |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manitowoc UDP0080A | 110 lb/day | 75 lb/day | 32% |
| Ice-O-Matic UCG080A | 95 lb/day | 77.8 lb/day | 18% |
| Hoshizaki KM-116BAK | 130 lb/day | 110 lb/day | 15% |
| Hoshizaki KM-116BAJ | 125 lb/day | 100 lb/day | 20% |
If the machine will sit in a hot back-of-house or an outdoor bar, use the lower column.

What a 100 lb machine needs
A cold water line (ideally with a water filter), a drain at or below the machine (or a drain pump kit), and usually a 115V outlet on its own circuit. Front-breathing models can be built in flush. Others need side clearance; check the spec sheet. For the smallest machines, see small commercial ice machines.
