What stands out
- The DCM-500BAK is the efficiency pick. It makes 470 lb/day at 90/70 in the same 26-inch cabinet as the DCM-300BAK, which makes 240 lb, and uses less energy per pound (4.7 vs 6.0 kWh).
- The DCM-700BAK has the largest storage of any dispenser we sell, at 95 lb, for sites with big, concentrated rushes.
- The DCM-271BAK is the compact choice, at 16-5/8 inches wide and 31-3/4 inches tall with a standard plug. Its product page lists it as ADA-compliant.
- DCM-500BAH-OS vs DCM-500BAK-OS: the BAH uses R-404A refrigerant, is hardwired and has a slightly higher rating (618 lb) but lower warm-day output (450 lb) and higher energy use (5.62 kWh). The BAK-OS uses R290 and is more efficient.
What is cubelet ice?
Cubelet is Hoshizaki's name for its soft, chewable, nugget-style ice. It is compressed into small pieces that cool drinks quickly, absorb flavor and are easy to chew, which suits patient hydration, carbonated drinks, iced tea, water and blended drinks. Compare it with Scotsman's nugget ice and Manitowoc's in our nugget ice machine heads guide.
Push-button or Opti-Serve touchless?
Every DCM size comes in two dispensing styles:
| Push-button (BAK) | Opti-Serve touchless (-OS) | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Separate buttons for ice and water | Optical sensors dispense when a container is placed in the serving area |
| Containers | Any cup | Use opaque containers for reliable sensing |
| Best for | Staff areas, foodservice, budget installs | Healthcare, public lobbies, offices, anywhere touchpoints matter |
| Price difference | Lower | About $40-250 more on our listings |
Since the enclosed ice path keeps stored ice sealed either way, touchless mainly removes the shared button as a touchpoint. In hospitals and busy public spaces, most buyers consider it worth the small premium.
Choosing a size
Size on two things: daily ice at 90/70 and storage for your busiest few minutes.
| Setting | Daily ice | Peak pattern | Suggested model |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clinic, small office, waiting room | 100-200 lb | Steady | DCM-271BAK(-OS) |
| Hospital nursing unit, mid-size office | 200-240 lb | Moderate rushes | DCM-300BAK(-OS) |
| Hospital floor, hotel floor, large office | 300-470 lb | Regular rushes | DCM-500BAK(-OS) |
| Cafeteria, stadium suite level, large hospital, school | 450-580 lb | Big, concentrated rushes | DCM-700BAK(-OS) |
Common planning figures: about 1 lb of ice per person per day for offices and cafeterias, and about 5 lb per room for hotel guest ice. See hotel ice machines and office ice machines .
Storage matters more than you think
The DCM-300 and DCM-500 have the same 40 lb bin, so the DCM-500 refills it about twice as fast on a hot day. The DCM-700's 95 lb bin can serve a whole lunch rush from storage alone. If your users arrive in waves, size storage first.
Installation requirements
From the product pages:
- Power: 115V / 60Hz single-phase. The DCM-271 has a 6-ft cord with NEMA 5-15 plug (15A maximum breaker). The DCM-300, -500 and -700 need a 20A maximum breaker. The DCM-500BAH-OS is hardwired.
- Water: a 1/2-inch FPT inlet, potable water at 10-113 psig and 45-90°F.
- Drain: a 3/4-inch drain outlet with a hard drain line.
- Clearance: 6 inches at the rear and sides, and 24 inches above for auger service. The overhead clearance is the one most often missed.
- Room: 45-100°F, indoors, out of direct sunlight.
- Stands: Hoshizaki recommends the SD-271 stand for the DCM-271, the SD-500 for the DCM-300 and DCM-500, and the SD-750 for the DCM-700 (sold separately).
- GFCI: where GFCI protection is required, the DCM-500BAK page recommends a GFCI breaker rather than a GFCI receptacle.
- Water treatment: a Hoshizaki water filter sized to the dispenser.
Heat and weight
| Model | Heat rejection | Net weight |
|---|---|---|
| DCM-271BAK | 3,500 BTU/hr | 136 lb |
| DCM-300BAK | 4,000 BTU/hr | 215 lb |
| DCM-500BAK | 6,100 BTU/hr | 251 lb |
| DCM-500BAH-OS | 7,000 BTU/hr | 251 lb |
| DCM-700BAK | 7,400 BTU/hr | 300 lb |
Check that the room's ventilation can handle the heat, and that the stand or counter can carry the weight plus a full bin of ice. Confirm doorway widths before delivery, especially for the 34-inch-wide DCM-700.
Running costs
At $0.15 per kWh and published energy figures:
| Model | Example daily use | Electricity per year |
|---|---|---|
| DCM-271BAK | 150 lb | about $435 |
| DCM-300BAK | 200 lb | about $660 |
| DCM-500BAK | 400 lb | about $1,030 |
| DCM-700BAK | 500 lb | about $1,330 |
Water use is about 12 gallons per 100 lb for every DCM model, much less than a cube machine. See our operating cost guide .
Warranty
The DCM product pages list 3 years parts and labor on the entire machine and 5 years parts on the compressor and air-cooled condenser coil. The DCM-500BAH-OS page also lists 5 years parts and labor on the evaporator. Confirm current terms on each product page.
Care and cleaning
- Wipe the dispensing area, spout and drain-pan grate daily. The spout is removable on models such as the DCM-271BAK.
- Clean the removable air filter on a schedule suited to the location.
- Clean and sanitize the full ice path at least every six months, more often in healthcare.
- Replace the water filter cartridge on schedule.
See our countertop ice maker cleaning guide .
DCM dispensers in hospitals
Cubelet ice is soft and easy to chew, which suits patient hydration, and touchless -OS models remove the shared button as a touchpoint. A typical setup for a 30-bed unit:
- Nourishment station: a DCM-500BAK-OS, with 470 lb/day at 90/70 and 40 lb of storage for medication rounds and meal times.
- Staff break room: a DCM-271BAK, compact and on a standard plug.
Follow your infection-control team's cleaning schedule. See healthcare ice machines and our healthcare ice machine buying guide .
Worked example: a hotel guest floor
A 60-room floor plans about 5 lb of guest ice per room per day, so about 300 lb, with an evening peak.
- DCM-300BAK-OS: 240 lb/day at 90/70. Short on hot days.
- DCM-500BAK-OS: 470 lb/day at 90/70 with 40 lb of storage. Covers the floor with headroom.
Hotels often put one dispenser per floor in a ventilated alcove, away from guest-room walls to reduce noise. See hotel ice machines .
Placement checklist
- Height: 31-3/4 in. (DCM-271), 40 in. (DCM-300 and DCM-500) or about 48 in. (DCM-700), plus 24 inches above for auger service.
- Width: 16-5/8 in., 26 in. or about 34 in. Check doorways for the DCM-700.
- Support: a matching Hoshizaki stand or a counter rated for the full weight.
- Utilities: 115V circuit (20A max breaker on DCM-300 and larger), 1/2-inch water inlet with a filter, hard 3/4-inch drain.
- Environment: indoors, 45-100°F, out of direct sunlight, with 6 inches at the back and sides.
Cubelet vs nugget: does it matter?
Hoshizaki's cubelet and other brands' nugget ice are both soft, chewable ice made by compressing ice from an auger. Customers rarely notice the difference in a drink. The choice between brands usually comes down to output, storage, footprint and touchless options rather than ice type. Where Hoshizaki stands out is range: the DCM line runs from a 16-5/8-inch countertop unit to a 719 lb/day machine with 95 lb of storage.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the 24 inches above. Hoshizaki requires it for auger service.
- Choosing the DCM-300 when the DCM-500 fits. Same cabinet, almost double the hot-day output.
- Using clear cups with Opti-Serve. Opaque containers work best.
- Weak support. The DCM-700 weighs 300 lb before ice.
- No hard drain. The drain must be a proper hard drain line.
