Three bin families
Rotocast plastic: B330P and B530P
Rotocast bins have a one-piece molded polyethylene exterior that won't dent or rust, which makes them a practical, lower-cost choice for back-of-house ice rooms. Features from the product pages:
- B330P: 344 lb, only 31 inches tall before legs (37 inches with them), so it suits low ceilings or a taller head. Top-hinged, front-opening door; baffle removable without tools; built-in scoop holder and scoop; 6 inches of rear utility clearance; NSF listed; engineered and assembled in the USA.
- B530P: 536 lb in the same 30-inch width, 44 inches tall before legs.
Metallic: B322S, B842S and B948S
These have a metallic exterior over bonded polyurethane foam insulation, with a sanitary, scratch- and scuff-resistant liner. The B322S adds a spring-loaded door that assists opening and closing, a built-in scoop holder, a removable baffle and a recessed drain fitting.
Stainless steel: BL1048S and BL1660S
Scotsman's large bins have a stainless steel exterior and a 19-inch access opening height. Each includes a universal adapter plate , an 82 oz ice scoop and 6-inch adjustable legs, and carries a 5-year parts and labor warranty. See all stainless steel ice bins .
How Scotsman rates capacity
Scotsman's application capacity is based on 90% of total bin volume at an ice density of 34 lb per cubic foot (as stated on the B330P product page). Real storage varies with ice type, so nugget and flake fill a bin differently from cubes.
Which bin for which Prodigy head?
| Scotsman head | Width | Rated lb/day | Bin options |
|---|---|---|---|
| MC0322MAX-1, NH0422AX-1, NH0622AX-1, NH0922AX-1 | 22 in. | 362-862 | B322S (370 lb) |
| NS1322AX-32 | 22 in. | 1,314 | B322S or a larger bin with adapter |
| MC0330MAX-1 | 30 in. | 365 | B330P (344 lb) or B530P (536 lb) |
| MC0530MAX-1, MC0630MAX-1 | 30 in. | 476-582 | B530P (536 lb) |
| MC0830MAX-32, MC1030MAX-32 | 30 in. | 921-1,041 | B530P, or B842S / B948S with adapter |
| MC1448MA-32, MC1848MA-32 | 48 in. | 1,553-1,909 | B948S, BL1048S, or BL1660S (60 in.) with adapter |
Fitting a narrower head on a wider bin requires the approved bin-top kit or adapter for that exact head; the BL bins include a universal adapter plate. Confirm the pairing on the product page or ask us. See Scotsman Prodigy ice machines and bin adapters and deflectors .
Nugget heads: Prodigy Plus nugget heads can also sit on Scotsman nugget dispensers for self-service. For bin storage of nugget ice, check that the bin and kit are approved for nugget.
Sizing a Scotsman bin
Size the bin to your busiest period, not daily output. A useful check is how many hours of production the bin holds:
| Head and bin | Head output at 90/70 | Bin | Hours of production stored |
|---|---|---|---|
| MC0330MAX-1 on B330P | 283 lb/day | 344 lb | About 29 hours |
| MC0530MAX-1 on B530P | 370 lb/day | 536 lb | About 35 hours |
| MC0630MAX-1 on B530P | 479 lb/day | 536 lb | About 27 hours |
| MC1030MAX-32 on B948S | 782 lb/day | 893 lb | About 27 hours |
| MC1848MA-32 on BL1660S | 1,426 lb/day | 1,660 lb | About 28 hours |
Bins that hold roughly a day of production let the head build a full reserve overnight for the next day's rush. Read our bin sizing guide .
B330P vs B530P
Both are 30-inch rotocast bins. The B530P holds 56% more ice (536 vs 344 lb) but stands 13 inches taller. Choose the B330P if ceiling height is tight or you want a low ice-dispensing height; choose the B530P for more reserve.
Installation
- Rear clearance: about 6 inches behind the bin for drain and utility connections (B330P, B530P, B842S, B948S).
- Drain: 3/4-inch NPT on the B-series, 1-inch FPT on the BL bins. Run a separate gravity drain with an air gap per local code.
- Floor: level, and strong enough for the bin, the head and a full ice load.
- Head clearance: allow room above for the head and its service access.
- Delivery: shipping weights run from 90 lb (B330P) to 340 lb (BL1660S).
Care
Remove the baffle to clean and sanitize the liner, door, scoop holder and scoop on a regular schedule, usually alongside the ice machine's cleaning. Keep the scoop in its holder. Keep the drain clear. Ice bins are insulated, not refrigerated.

Cleaning a Scotsman bin, step by step
- Turn off the head and empty the bin, or move the ice to a clean container.
- Remove the baffle (on the B330P it comes out without tools).
- Wash the liner, door, scoop holder and scoop with a manufacturer-approved cleaner.
- Rinse with potable water, then sanitize all food-zone surfaces.
- Air-dry, refit the baffle and restart the head.
Do this at least whenever you clean the ice machine, and more often in healthcare and food display use.
Worked example: a bar with two ice wells
A bar with 120 seats runs an MC0530MAX-1 (370 lb/day at 90/70) and uses about 140 lb of ice between 9 pm and midnight on a Saturday, when the head makes only about 45 lb.
- Ice needed from storage: 140 - 45 = about 95 lb.
- A B330P (344 lb) covers it, with plenty of reserve.
- If the bar adds bottle service or a second bar, a B530P (536 lb) gives more headroom in the same 30-inch width.
Bin vs dispenser
| Head on a Scotsman bin | Scotsman Meridian dispenser | |
|---|---|---|
| Who takes the ice | Staff, with a scoop | Customers or staff, touch-free |
| Storage | 344-1,660 lb | 7-40 lb |
| Best for | Bars, kitchens, banquets | Offices, lobbies, healthcare |
See Scotsman ice dispensers .
Stacking and backup
Large bins such as the B948S, BL1048S and BL1660S can carry more than one head with the correct Scotsman kit, adding capacity and backup. Confirm the combination with Scotsman's application information before ordering.

Scotsman bin maintenance calendar
| Task | Frequency |
|---|---|
| Wipe the door, scoop holder and handle | Daily |
| Check the drain flows freely | Weekly |
| Remove the baffle; clean and sanitize the liner, door and scoop | Whenever the head is cleaned, at least every six months |
| Check the spring-loaded door (B322S) closes fully | Monthly |
| Check the bin is level | Every six months |
Common mistakes
- Bin narrower than the head. Always match or exceed the head width.
- Missing bin-top kit. Narrower or other-brand heads need the approved kit.
- Not allowing 6 inches at the back. Drain and utilities need the space.
- Sizing by daily output. Size by peak period.
- Assuming a bin is refrigerated. It's insulated; plan the drain.
