Wet granular ice — often called chip ice — is soft, moldable, and easy to chew, with a 40–50% residual water content that makes it ideal for chilling drinks, displaying fresh food, and patient care. The IQ 900 W produces this ice continuously through a stainless steel auger system and drops it out of an opening in the bottom of the unit into the bin below.
The "W" model is water-cooled, meaning it rejects heat into a water supply rather than into the surrounding air. This gives it two practical advantages over the air-cooled IQ 900 A: it produces slightly more ice (1,005 vs. 980 lb/day nominal) and uses noticeably less electricity (3.2 vs. 4.1 kWh per 100 lb of ice).
