IFQ vs IFI: which type do you need?
Choose the IFI4C inline filter if: - Your machine is undercounter or compact and makes up to 600 lb/day. - The machine has a 1/4-inch water connection. The GEMU09090 Pearl Ice undercounter, for example, uses a 1/4-inch copper compression water connection. - You have no wall space for a manifold.
Choose an IFQ system if: - You want finer filtration (0.5 micron instead of 10) and chlorine taste and odor reduction from activated carbon. - You need more flow or a modular head. - You want a shut-off valve and pressure gauge built into the installation.
The IFI4C is the 1/4-inch version. Ice-O-Matic also makes the IFI8C with 3/8-inch connections.
Sizing the IFQ systems
Size by the ice machine's peak water flow and its daily water use:
| Ice-O-Matic machine | Daily output | Suggested filter |
|---|---|---|
| UCG gourmet undercounter (UCG060A to UCG130A) | 63-121 lb | IFI4C or IFQ1 |
| GEMU09090 Pearl undercounter | 110 lb | IFI4C or IFQ1 |
| CIMU220 and CIMU300 undercounter cubers | 220-302 lb | IFQ1 |
| CIM0320 to CIM0530 modular heads | 325-525 lb | IFQ1 or IFQ1-XL |
| GEM Pearl heads GEM0450 to GEM0956 | 415-928 lb | IFQ1-XL |
| CIM0636 to CIM0836 modular heads | 600-900 lb | IFQ1-XL or IFQ2 |
| CIM1126, CIM1136, GEM1306, CIM1446 | 1,000-1,600 lb | IFQ2 |
These are starting points. The final choice depends on the machine's peak flow, so check the installation manual or ask us.
How fast do you use the gallons?
Ice-O-Matic cubers use about 17-24 gallons of water per 100 lb of ice, and Pearl Ice machines about 12, according to our product pages. At 20 gallons per 100 lb:
| Ice per day | Water per day | IFQ1 (15,000 gal) | IFQ1-XL (22,500 gal) | IFQ2 (30,000 gal) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 300 lb | 60 gal | About 8 months | About 12 months | - |
| 500 lb | 100 gal | About 5 months | About 7.5 months | About 10 months |
| 900 lb | 180 gal | - | About 4 months | About 5.5 months |
Ice-O-Matic's rule is to replace cartridges at least every 180 days even if the gallons aren't used up. For busy machines, the gallon rating can run out sooner. Change at whichever comes first.
What IsoNet does
Every Ice-O-Matic filter here includes IsoNet scale inhibitor . It treats the water so hardness minerals are less likely to precipitate and build up as scale in the ice machine's water circuit. That matters because scale:
- Slows harvest on cube machines like the CIMU and CIM series.
- Adds wear to the auger and gearbox on Pearl Ice machines.
- Clouds gourmet ice from the UCG series.
The IFQ systems add activated carbon for chlorine taste and odor reduction and 0.5-micron particle reduction for sediment. Clear, odor-free water makes better ice, especially for the clear gourmet cubes in UCG machines.
What comes with an IFQ system
From the product pages, each IFQ system includes a wall-mount bracket, an inlet shut-off valve, a pressure gauge and quick-connect fittings. The IOMQ and IOMQ-XL cartridges use a quarter-turn quick-twist connection, so changes take a minute without dismantling the installation.
| System | Replacement cartridges per change |
|---|---|
| IFQ1 | 1 x IOMQ |
| IFQ1-XL | 1 x IOMQ-XL |
| IFQ2 | 2 x IOMQ |
See replacement cartridges .
Installing the IFI4C inline filter
- Install on the cold potable-water line that feeds the ice maker, not on condenser water.
- Keep pressure between 10 and 100 psi and inlet water between 35 and 100°F.
- Use the 1/4-inch compression connections (or choose the IFI8C for 3/8 inch).
- Leave access to swap the cartridge every 180 days or sooner.
Installing an IFQ system
- Mount on a wall near the ice machine's water supply, with 3 inches of clearance below the cartridges.
- Close the built-in shut-off valve to change cartridges.
- Watch the gauge: a pressure drop across the filter means the cartridge is loading up.
- Flush new cartridges before reconnecting the machine.
See our installation checklist .
Warranty
Ice-O-Matic's March 2026 limited warranty, as quoted on the IFI4C product page, excludes water-filter cartridges from accessory parts coverage. Cartridges are consumables. Check the product page for coverage on IFQ heads and housings.
Water quality and gourmet ice
Ice-O-Matic's UCG machines make clear gourmet cubes, and clear ice is very sensitive to water quality. Minerals, sediment and chlorine show up as cloudy cubes, white specks and off-tastes. For a UCG machine:
- Use an IFQ1 rather than the IFI4C if you want carbon filtration for taste and odor.
- Change the cartridge on time; scale clouds gourmet cubes before it slows production.
- Descale more often in hard-water areas.
Water quality and Pearl Ice
GEM and GEMU Pearl Ice machines run an auger continuously. Scale on the freezing cylinder makes the gearbox work harder, and Ice-O-Matic's SystemSafe load monitor may shut the machine down if the load is too high. Good filtration and on-time descaling help keep Pearl Ice machines running smoothly.
How hard is your water?
The U.S. Geological Survey classifies hardness this way:
| Hardness (as calcium carbonate) | USGS classification |
|---|---|
| 0-60 mg/L | Soft |
| 61-120 mg/L | Moderately hard |
| 121-180 mg/L | Hard |
| Over 180 mg/L | Very hard |
IsoNet helps prevent scale from precipitating, but it isn't a softener. In hard and very hard water, change cartridges sooner than 180 days and descale the machine more often. Check your utility's annual water quality report for your hardness level.
Changing an IFQ cartridge
- Turn off the ice machine.
- Close the inlet shut-off valve on the IFQ system.
- Give the IOMQ or IOMQ-XL cartridge a quarter turn and pull it down.
- Write the date on the new cartridge, push it up and give it a quarter turn to lock.
- Open the shut-off valve slowly and check for leaks.
- Flush before the ice machine draws water, then restart.
- Note the gauge reading as your baseline.
On the IFQ2, replace both cartridges at the same time.
Changing the IFI4C inline filter
- Turn off the ice machine and the water supply.
- Disconnect the 1/4-inch compression fittings on each end.
- Fit the new cartridge in the correct flow direction, date it and reconnect.
- Open the water, check for leaks and flush before restarting the machine.
Filter and maintenance calendar for Ice-O-Matic machines
| Task | Frequency |
|---|---|
| Check the IFQ pressure gauge and look for leaks | Monthly |
| Clean the ice machine's air filter | Monthly |
| Replace IOMQ, IOMQ-XL or IFI4C cartridges | At least every 180 days, or at rated gallons |
| Clean, descale and sanitize the ice machine | At least every six months; more often in hard water |
| Check ice clarity and harvest speed | Weekly, as an early warning of scale |
Writing the install date on each cartridge is the simplest way to stay on schedule.
Is the IFI4C enough, or do I need an IFQ?
The IFI4C protects against scale (IsoNet) and coarse particles (10 micron) in a very small package, which is enough for many undercounter installations with decent water. Step up to an IFQ1 when:
- Your water has a noticeable chlorine taste or odor (the IFQ's carbon reduces it).
- You want 0.5-micron filtration for clearer ice, especially for UCG gourmet machines.
- You want a shut-off valve and gauge for easier service.
- Your machine needs more than 1.0 GPM at peak.
Common mistakes
- Using the IFI4C on a large modular head. It is rated for machines up to 600 lb/day and 1.0 GPM.
- Choosing by gallons only. Flow (GPM) must cover the machine's peak demand.
- Running cartridges past 180 days. Scale protection fades with time.
- Filtering condenser water on water-cooled machines. Filter only the ice-making supply.
- Forgetting service clearance. IFQ cartridges need 3 inches below.
